POSTNATAL PILATES

What is postnatal Pilates?

Postnatal Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on helping new mothers recover and rebuild their bodies after childbirth. It involves a series of exercises that are designed to strengthen the core muscles, improve flexibility, and promote overall physical well-being in the postpartum period.

Postnatal Pilates typically takes into consideration the specific needs and challenges that new mothers may face after giving birth, such as weakened pelvic floor muscles, abdominal separation (diastasis recti), and changes in posture. The exercises are usually gentle and low-impact, with an emphasis on proper alignment, breathing, and pelvic floor engagement.

What can you expect from a postnatal Pilates session?

  • Core strength: Pregnancy and childbirth can significantly weaken the core muscles, including the abdominal muscles, pelvic floor muscles, and back muscles. Postnatal Pilates exercises target these areas, helping to restore core strength and stability.

  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation: Postnatal Pilates often includes exercises specifically aimed at rehabilitating the pelvic floor muscles, which can become weakened or damaged during pregnancy and childbirth. Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles is important for bladder and bowel control, as well as overall pelvic health.

  • Flexibility and posture: Postnatal Pilates incorporates exercises that promote flexibility and proper posture, which can be beneficial for new mothers who may experience changes in their body alignment and muscle tone after giving birth.

  • Stress relief: The postpartum period can be physically and emotionally demanding for new mothers. Postnatal Pilates can serve as a form of stress relief, allowing mothers to focus on their physical well-being and engage in mindful movement.

  • Postpartum recovery: Postnatal Pilates is typically tailored to the needs of postpartum women, taking into consideration the physical changes that occur during pregnancy and childbirth. It can help new mothers gradually and safely regain their pre-pregnancy strength and fitness levels.
